Comedy Style
Tommy Donovan is a unique and versatile comedian who brings a broad range of comedy writing and performance skills to the standup stage. Having spent decades striving to be a good husband, father, and model citizen, Tommy now channels his hilarious perspective on life into his act. His observational style of comedy tackles life’s simplest questions, often prompting audiences to reflect and reconsider their own viewpoints.
Early Passions
From an early age, Tommy was drawn to performing in front of live audiences. His passion grew even stronger after discovering rap music. In high school, he worked various odd jobs to save up for DJ equipment, which allowed him to perform at homecomings, proms, and weddings across the state. During his time as a DJ, Tommy formed his own rap group, “Tommy D and the Generation,” writing and performing original lyrics to classic breakbeats. He was accompanied by three choreographed dancers—Jeana, Joby, and Geoff—who added energy and flair to every performance.
“I saw the music video of Run-DMC’s Walk This Way and I knew what I was going to do with my life!”
Discovering Comedy and Mascot Fame
Tommy first recognized his comedic talent as a Journalism and Theater student at the University of South Carolina. After a challenging freshman year on the JV Cheerleading squad, his coach encouraged him to audition for “Cocky,” the University of South Carolina Gamecocks’ mascot. During his time as the only “Cocky” at the university, Tommy gained national recognition by winning the 1994 UCA National Mascot Championship, which aired on ESPN.
This achievement opened new doors for Tommy, leading to an opportunity with the Carolina Panthers as they launched their expansion franchise in Charlotte, NC. Hired as “Sir Purr,” Tommy became known for producing comedic sketches for the stadium’s jumbotron screens and performing his memorable “Tootsee Roll” dance at midfield during the two-minute warning of every Panthers home game. Tommy’s tenure as “Sir Purr” became legendary following an incident where he inadvertently downed a live punt in the end zone during a critical game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“I was in character! I was simply strolling the back line of the end zone, saw the ball bouncing my way, and simply reacted like a cat would… I pounced!”
The stunt resulted in a penalty flag from legendary NFL referee Dick Hantak. Steelers head coach Bill Cowher graciously declined the penalty, and the next play saw Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart make an 80-yard touchdown run. Though the play stood, this memorable moment became an iconic part of Tommy’s mascot legacy and is still fondly remembered by fans. His accidental slapstick and quick-thinking showmanship highlighted Tommy’s natural comedic timing and ability to engage an audience, even in the most unexpected situations. And…yes…the Panthers still wone the game. Thank goodness!
Broadcasting Career and Comedy Writing
After his mascot career, Tommy transitioned to broadcasting in his hometown of Greenville, SC. He spent years developing his skills as a producer, news reporter, sports anchor, and talk show host for local TV and radio stations such as WYFF-TV, WSSL 100.5 FM, and WORD 98.9 FM. To support his wife and four children, Tommy also worked as a home inspector as owner of RIC Home Inspections. Throughout his broadcasting career, he continued to pursue his love of comedy, writing and hosting segments for various radio shows and podcasts, including The Fame Radio Show, The Skip Church Show, and The Home Pros Radio Show.
